When Your Car Shakes: What It Usually Means
Where and when the shaking happens is the key to diagnosing it fast. Here’s what we typically see:
Steering Wheel Shakes at Highway Speeds (55+ mph)
Usually tire balance or wheel alignment issue. Sometimes a bent wheel. Easy fix — often under $100.
Whole Car Shakes When Braking
Warped brake rotors. The uneven surface causes the pads to pulse instead of press smoothly. Either resurface or replace the rotors. Common on cars with worn pads or heavy mountain driving (hello, Highway 108 to Sonora).
Car Shakes at Idle (Stopped at a Light)
Engine misfire, bad motor mount, or vacuum leak. The engine isn’t running smoothly at low RPM. May be accompanied by rough running or a check engine light.
Car Shakes When Accelerating
Usually a failing CV joint or motor mount. Sometimes a bad U-joint on rear-wheel-drive vehicles. Get it inspected before the CV joint fails completely.
Car Shakes Only When Turning
Almost always a failing CV joint or bad wheel bearing. Especially if you also hear a clicking sound. This is a safety issue — get it inspected this week.
Car Shakes After Driving in the Rain
Common in Modesto after our winter rains — moisture on rotors or brakes can cause temporary shake that goes away after a few miles. If it persists after the car warms up, it’s not moisture — it’s rotors or brakes.
Is It Safe to Drive a Shaking Car?
Depends on the cause and severity:
- Mild highway shake — likely tires. Safe to drive short distances but get it fixed within a week; uneven tire wear is expensive.
- Braking shake — safe short distances but plan to fix soon. Severe shake can affect braking distance.
- Idle shake with rough running — get it diagnosed within a week; misfires damage catalytic converters over time.
- Turning shake with clicking — CV joint. Drive short distances only until inspected — it can fail completely and leave you stranded.
- New, severe shake at any speed — pull over and call us. Something has broken or come loose.
What Our Free Shake Inspection Includes
- You describe the shake — when, where in the car, what speed, and what changes it.
- Test drive — often we can identify the cause in the first mile.
- Diagnostic scan — if a check engine code is present, we read it (free).
- On the lift — we visually inspect CV joints, motor mounts, wheels, tires, and brakes.
- Written estimate — cause, cost, urgency. You decide next steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to fix a shaking car?
Depends on the cause. Wheel balance: $60–$100. Rotor resurfacing: $150–$250. Rotor replacement: $400–$800. CV joint: $200–$500. Motor mount: $250–$600. Written estimate provided before any work.
Is my shaking car safe to drive to your shop?
Usually yes, if the shake is mild and you drive short distances at moderate speed. If the shake is severe, sudden, or accompanied by loss of control — pull over safely and call us. We can advise or arrange help.
Could my shaking just be old tires?
Very possibly. Tires that are cupped, worn unevenly, or have separating belts can cause noticeable shake. Free inspection tells you in 10 minutes whether it’s tires or something more serious.
Will you check my whole car or just the shaking issue?
We inspect the specific issue at no charge and give you a clear estimate. If we notice other safety issues during inspection we’ll mention them — but you’ll never be pressured to fix anything beyond what you came in for.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk in any weekday from 8am–5pm. Calling ahead helps us have a technician ready.
