Diagnose Before You Tow
Before you spend $150+ on a tow truck, spend two minutes on the phone with us. In many cases we can figure out what’s going on and either walk you through a fix (loose battery cable, wet ignition) or confirm whether a tow is really needed. That call is free.
Why Won’t My Car Start? The Most Common Causes
Nothing Happens When You Turn the Key
Dead battery or bad battery connection. No clicking, no crank, no lights. Check that battery terminals are tight. If they are, the battery is dead. We can test batteries free.
Clicking When You Turn the Key
Battery has some charge but not enough to crank the starter, or the starter motor itself is failing. If a jump start gets you going, it’s likely the battery. If it still won’t start after a jump, it’s the starter.
Engine Cranks But Won’t Fire
Fuel or ignition problem. Could be: empty gas tank (embarrassing but common), failed fuel pump, dead ignition coil, bad spark plugs, or fuel injection failure. Requires diagnostic to identify.
Starts, Then Immediately Dies
Usually a fuel delivery issue, security system fault, or crankshaft position sensor. Some cars will start briefly on residual fuel pressure then die when demand exceeds supply.
Starts Rough or Takes Several Tries
Weak battery, dirty fuel injectors, worn spark plugs, or a fuel pressure regulator problem. Often a maintenance issue that’s about to become a bigger one.
Won’t Start When Cold, Fine When Warm
Common in Modesto winters. Usually weak battery, worn spark plugs, or bad coolant temperature sensor. Battery life drops significantly below 40°F.
Won’t Start When Hot, Fine When Cold
Heat-sensitive component — often the starter motor or ignition coils. Failing starters often work fine cold but refuse to engage when hot.
What to Try Before Calling Us
- Check the gas gauge. Really. It happens.
- Check the battery terminals. Wiggle them. If they move, they’re loose. Tighten with a wrench.
- Check the shifter. Automatic transmissions won’t start unless in Park or Neutral. Sometimes the neutral safety switch acts up — try shifting to Neutral and starting.
- Check the steering wheel. If the wheel is locked, the key won’t turn. Wiggle the wheel gently while turning the key.
- Try a jump start. If it starts and stays running, it’s the battery. Get to us for a battery test and replacement.
What We Do When You Bring It In
- Free electrical system test — battery, alternator, starter draw
- Fuel system pressure test if needed
- OBD-II scan to read any stored trouble codes
- Written estimate — cause, cost, and timing
- Most starter/battery jobs are same-day
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to fix a car that won’t start?
Depends on the cause. New battery: $150–$300 installed. Starter motor: $350–$600. Alternator: $400–$700. Fuel pump: $500–$1,200. Written estimate before any work.
Can you help me over the phone?
Often yes. Call us and describe what happens when you try to start it. We can frequently narrow down the issue and tell you whether it needs a tow or if there’s something to check first.
Do you offer roadside service?
We don’t run a mobile fleet, but we work with local towing companies and can often coordinate a tow directly to our shop. This saves you time and paperwork.
My car won’t start and I need it today — can you help?
Call us first thing in the morning. Most starter and battery jobs are same-day. Fuel system and ignition repairs may take longer but we prioritize customers who are stranded.
Do I need to call the dealership?
No. Auto Alternatives services every major make and model, including under-warranty vehicles. Federal law protects your right to use an independent shop without voiding your warranty.
