Central Valley summer + broken AC = not a combination you want to live with. Auto Alternatives offers free AC system inspection at our Modesto shop — we’ll pressure-test the system, tell you exactly what’s wrong, and quote the repair on the spot. Most AC repairs are same-day.

Why Your AC Isn’t Blowing Cold
The most common causes we see, especially heading into Modesto’s hot months:
Low Refrigerant (Most Common)
AC refrigerant slowly leaks out over time. When the level gets low, the system can’t produce cold air. Sometimes a simple recharge fixes it for a season. If it leaks again quickly, we need to find and fix the leak — otherwise you’re just paying for refrigerant that escapes.
Failed AC Compressor
The heart of the system. Compressors typically last 8–12 years but fail sooner with heavy use or if the system has been low on refrigerant. Symptoms: no cold air at all, sometimes strange noises, occasionally the AC clutch not engaging.
Clogged or Failed Condenser
The condenser sits in front of the radiator and gets hit by everything — bugs, road debris, small stones. Damaged condensers leak or clog and prevent proper cooling.
Bad Cabin Air Filter
Restricted airflow makes the AC feel weak even when the system is working fine. Central Valley dust and ag pollen clog these filters faster than in other regions. Cheap, quick fix.
Blend Door Actuator Failure
A small motor inside the dash directs air between hot and cold. When it fails, you might get cold air from one vent and hot from another, or the temperature won’t respond to the controls.
Electrical Issues
Blown fuse, bad relay, failed pressure switch, or a wiring issue in the AC circuit. Diagnostic scan and electrical testing pinpoints these fast.
Why AC Failure Is Worse in Modesto
Central Valley summers regularly hit 100°+ from June through September. That’s brutal on AC systems. Cars driven in this climate:
- Lose refrigerant faster (heat = higher system pressure = more strain on seals)
- Wear out compressors sooner
- Accumulate dust and ag debris in the condenser
- Need cabin filter changes twice as often as coastal cars
The good news: we know exactly what fails on Modesto-area vehicles and how to fix it fast.
What Our Free AC Check Includes
- Pressure test both sides of the AC system
- Visual inspection of compressor, belts, and condenser
- Airflow check from vents at all settings
- Cabin filter inspection
- Written estimate for any repairs needed
Free check. No pressure. If it just needs a recharge, we’ll tell you. If it needs a compressor, we’ll tell you that too — and explain what happens if you don’t fix it.
AC Repair Cost Ranges
- Recharge with dye: $150–$250 (includes leak detection dye)
- Cabin air filter: $40–$80
- Compressor replacement: $800–$1,500 (depending on vehicle)
- Condenser: $500–$900
- Blend door actuator: $200–$500
- Complete AC system rebuild: $1,200–$2,500
Written estimate before any work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AC check really free?
Yes. Free pressure test, visual inspection, and written estimate. If you need a repair, we quote it before starting.
How long does an AC recharge last?
A properly working system, with no leaks, holds refrigerant for years. If yours only lasts a season, there’s a leak — recharging without fixing the leak is just paying for refrigerant that escapes.
Can I just add refrigerant myself with a can from the auto parts store?
Sometimes yes, sometimes it causes problems. Modern systems require specific refrigerant amounts (measured to the ounce). Overcharging can damage the compressor. If you’re not sure, let us do it right — often for the same price as buying a can.
My AC blows cool but not cold. What’s wrong?
Usually low refrigerant or a partially failing component. Sometimes it’s a clogged cabin filter restricting airflow. Free check identifies the cause in 10 minutes.
Do you service Tesla AC?
Yes. We’re one of the few independent shops in the Central Valley that services Tesla AC systems. Book by calling ahead.
