Free Brake Inspection — Same Day

If you’re hearing a squeal, feeling a shake, noticing the pedal go softer than usual, or your brake warning light is on — walk in or call ahead. We’ll get your car on the lift, measure your pads, check your rotors, inspect the fluid and lines, and give you a written report. Free. No obligation. If you don’t need work, we tell you honestly.

If you do need work, we quote it in writing before we touch a bolt.

What’s Included in an Auto Alternatives Brake Inspection

  • Pad thickness measurement on all four wheels (measured in millimeters, not eyeballed)
  • Rotor thickness measurement against manufacturer minimum spec
  • Visual inspection of rotors for scoring, glazing, warping, and heat cracking
  • Caliper and slide pin inspection — checking for seized or leaking calipers
  • Brake hose and hard line inspection — looking for cracks, swelling, or corrosion
  • Brake fluid condition and moisture test
  • Parking brake operation check
  • Written report of what we found and what (if anything) we recommend

Brake Repair Prices in Modesto

We publish price ranges up front. Most Modesto customers pay:

  • Brake pad replacement (front or rear): $200–$400 per axle
  • Pad and rotor replacement (front or rear): $450–$800 per axle
  • Full four-wheel brake job (pads and rotors): $900–$1,400
  • Brake caliper replacement: $350–$700 per caliper
  • Brake fluid flush and bleed: $130–$180
  • Brake hose replacement: $150–$300 per hose
  • ABS module diagnostic: Free code scan; repair quoted before starting

Final price depends on your specific vehicle, whether you want OEM or premium aftermarket parts, and whether the rotors can be safely resurfaced or need full replacement. Trucks and larger SUVs cost more due to larger parts. Ceramic pads cost more than semi-metallic. We walk you through the options and let you decide.

How to Tell If Your Brakes Need Attention

Squealing or Squeaking When You Brake

Most common warning sign. Modern brake pads have wear-indicator tabs that squeal when the pad has worn down to a specific thickness. If the squeal appears and disappears with braking, this is almost certainly the cause. Time to schedule pad replacement — usually before rotor damage begins. See our detailed squeaky brake diagnosis page for more.

Grinding When You Brake

You’ve waited too long. The pads have worn through and metal is contacting your rotors, gouging them with every stop. Stop driving on this and get in today — what would have been a $250 pad job may now be a $700 pad-and-rotor job. See our grinding noise page for more.

Shake or Pulsation in the Steering Wheel When Braking

Warped rotors. The uneven surface causes the pads to grab and release rapidly, transmitting vibration through the steering. Common on cars driven hard on mountain descents (Highway 108 to Sonora, Highway 120 to Yosemite) or on vehicles that have been driven with worn pads. Rotors either need resurfacing or replacement depending on remaining thickness. See our car shaking diagnosis page.

Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal

Usually air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a leak in the hydraulic system. Safety concern — bring it in this week. Sometimes just a fluid flush solves it; sometimes it’s a failing master cylinder or caliper.

Brake Pedal Goes to the Floor

Serious safety issue. Could be a major fluid leak, a failed master cylinder, or a complete brake system failure. Do not drive it — call us and we can arrange a tow.

Car Pulls to One Side When Braking

Usually a stuck or seized caliper, uneven pad wear, or a collapsed brake hose restricting flow to one wheel. Safety concern, especially at highway speed. Get in this week.

Brake Warning Light On

Could be the parking brake still engaged, low brake fluid, worn pads with electronic sensors, or an ABS fault. Free code scan tells us which. If you also see the ABS light, don’t ignore it — this is a safety system issue.

Burning Smell After Braking

Overheated brakes. Common after long mountain descents or driving with the parking brake partially engaged. If it happens once after a hard descent, let the brakes cool and drive normally. If it happens repeatedly, get inspected — a seized caliper can cause this and lead to rotor and pad damage.

How Long Do Brake Pads Last?

Life depends heavily on driving style, terrain, and pad quality. Real-world ranges for the Central Valley:

  • Highway commuters (steady speeds, mostly the 99 or I-5): 50,000–70,000 miles
  • Mixed driving (some city, some highway): 30,000–50,000 miles
  • Stop-and-go city driving: 20,000–35,000 miles
  • Mountain driving (frequent Sonora, Yosemite, Tahoe trips): 20,000–40,000 miles due to steep descents
  • Heavy towing or hauling: 15,000–30,000 miles

For reference, AAA’s brake service guidance recommends a professional inspection at least once a year regardless of mileage. We do that for free with every oil change.

Pad and Rotor Options — What We Install

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

For: Late-model vehicles under warranty, luxury and performance cars, and customers who want factory-exact replacement.

Cost: Highest, but often what’s specified for warranty compliance.

Premium Aftermarket (Akebono, Bosch, Wagner)

For: Most vehicles. Meets or exceeds OEM specs at lower cost. What we install by default unless you request OEM.

Cost: Middle ground and typically the best value.

Ceramic Pads

For: Quieter operation, less brake dust on wheels, longer pad life. Popular for daily drivers who care about clean wheels.

Cost: Slight premium over standard pads, often worth it for the reduced dust and noise.

Semi-Metallic Pads

For: Better heat dissipation, better performance under heavy load. Common on trucks and performance vehicles.

Cost: Standard pricing. More brake dust than ceramic.

Heavy-Duty Pads (Trucks and Fleet)

For: Trucks that tow, haul, or work hard. See our diesel truck service for more.

Not sure which is right for your vehicle? We recommend based on how you drive, not what’s most expensive. Written estimate before we install anything.

Should Rotors Be Resurfaced or Replaced?

This is one of the most common questions we get. The honest answer:

  • Resurface if the rotor is above minimum thickness spec, has no cracks or deep scoring, and has at least one more pad cycle of material remaining. Saves you $200–$400 on the job.
  • Replace if the rotor is at or below minimum thickness, has heat cracks or heavy scoring, or is warped beyond what resurfacing can fix. Trying to reuse a bad rotor causes new pads to wear unevenly and doesn’t solve the underlying issue.

Some shops replace rotors on every brake job regardless. We don’t. Some shops resurface everything to save money. We don’t do that either. Every rotor gets measured, and we recommend based on the actual condition.

  • Same-day service on most brake work when parts are in stock
  • Written estimates before any work begins — you approve, then we start

  • Read our Google reviews — customers consistently mention words like “honest,” “no pressure,” and “fair pricing”

Brake Fluid Flush — The Service Most Shops Forget to Mention

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time (it’s hygroscopic — that’s the technical term). Contaminated fluid boils at lower temperatures, which can cause brake fade during mountain descents or heavy stops. Most manufacturers recommend a brake fluid flush every 2–3 years or 30,000 miles.

We include a fluid moisture check on every brake inspection. If your fluid tests over 3% moisture, we recommend a flush. If not, we don’t upsell it. Simple.

ABS and Traction Control Repair

Modern brakes are more than pads and rotors. When the ABS or traction control warning light is on, your car has a stored fault code telling us exactly which sensor or module is affected. We diagnose ABS issues with the free code scan, quote the repair, and get it fixed — often same day for common issues like wheel speed sensors.

Brake Service for Every Vehicle We Repair

Brakes vary by vehicle. What we specialize in:

  • All Toyota vehicles including Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander, Tacoma, Tundra, Prius, 4Runner
  • All Honda vehicles including Civic, Accord, CR-V, Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline
  • All Ford vehicles including F-150, Super Duty, Explorer, Escape, Mustang, Bronco
  • All Chevy and GMC vehicles including Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Colorado
  • All BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Volkswagen — European brake systems including performance pads for M, AMG, and RS models
  • All Tesla — Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X (Tesla brakes wear differently than ICE cars due to regenerative braking)
  • All diesel trucks — Duramax, Power Stroke, Cummins with heavy-duty brake components

Tesla Brake Service

Tesla brakes have a unique wear pattern because regenerative braking does most of the slowing at highway speeds. This means Tesla pads and rotors often last far longer than ICE vehicles — but the calipers and slide pins can seize from lack of use, and rotors can develop surface rust. Regular brake service on a Tesla is different from a gas car, but still needed. See our Tesla service page for details.

Warranty Coverage for Brake Repair

If your car is under an extended warranty, dealer service contract, or third-party warranty program (including Roberts Auto Sales warranty contracts), brake components may be covered. We handle the claim from start to finish — you bring the paperwork, we do the phone calls. Learn more on our warranty repair page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a brake job take?

Standard pad replacement: 60–90 minutes. Pads and rotors: 90 minutes to 2 hours. Full four-wheel brake job: 2–3 hours. Same-day service on almost every brake job when parts are in stock.

Do I need an appointment for brake service?

Walk-ins are welcome, but calling ahead lets us order parts if needed and reserves your bay time. For a free inspection alone, just come in.

Are your brake jobs guaranteed?

Yes. Parts and labor are warranted — specific terms are on your invoice. Most brake work carries a 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty on parts and labor, whichever comes first.

Can I keep driving with squeaky brakes?

For a short time, yes — squeaking usually means pads are close to worn but still working. Grinding means metal-on-metal contact and you should stop driving on those. Get in within a week if you’re hearing squeal.

Will you tell me honestly if I don’t need brakes?

Yes. Our reputation depends on it. If your pads have life left, we’ll tell you exactly how much and when to come back. No pressure to replace anything that doesn’t need replacing.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket brake pads?

Both — your choice. We default to premium aftermarket (Akebono, Bosch, Wagner) which meet or exceed OEM specs at lower cost. OEM available on request for warranty compliance or personal preference.

Can you fix my ABS warning light?

Yes. Free diagnostic scan tells us which sensor or module is affected. Common repairs like wheel speed sensors are often same-day. More involved ABS module repair quoted before starting.

How often should I flush brake fluid?

Every 2–3 years or 30,000 miles, per most manufacturer recommendations. We check moisture content on every brake inspection and only recommend a flush if the fluid tests contaminated.

Do you service brake systems on Tesla vehicles?

Yes. Tesla brakes have unique wear characteristics due to regenerative braking. We service Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X brake systems including caliper service to prevent seizing.
